NEW PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT 2/22/12

On February 16, 2012 the college received approval from the Oregon State Board of Nursing to offer an Associate of Applied Science degree in Registered Nursing. This is something the college has been developing for the past few years. Since last Thursday, the college has received a number of inquiries regarding the process for admission. This announcement is to inform everyone that the college will not be testing or enrolling for this program until authorization from the Office of Degree Authorization (State of Oregon) has been received. At this time, we do not know how long this process could take – it could be a matter of weeks or months. Once we have received this authorization, we will issue an additional announcement to the students.

This new Registered Nursing program will be offered at a second campus in the Portland metro area. At this time, we are finalizing plans for this new building, and will be releasing the address of the new location upon approval from the Office of Degree Authorization. All the current programs offered at this campuswill continue to be offered at this location here on Barbur Blvd.

a) High school diploma; or

b) GED or equivalent issued from a state authority

2. Complete a new student application. This application includes two essays questions:

3. The student must obtain an overall score of a 59% or higher on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS ) to make application into the program. This is a multiple-choice assessment of basic academic knowledge in reading, mathematics, science and English and language usage. The objectives assessed on the TEAS exam are those which nurse educators deemed most appropriate and relevant to measure entry level skills and abilities of nursing program applicants. Points awarded as a result of the overall TEAS score based on the following rubric:

1. Overall score of 59%-63% – 1

2. Overall score of 64%-68% – 2

3. Overall score of 69% – 73% – 3

4. Overall score of 74% – 78% – 4

5. Overall score of 79% -83% – 5

6. Overall score above 84% – 6

4. If the student obtains an overall score of a 59% or above on the TEAS test, the essays are reviewed by the Director of Admissions, the Director of Education, the Director of the Nursing Program, and the College President. The essay questions and the overall test score determines if the student is accepted into the program. Applicants are accepted on a point system with the maximum of 10 points that may be awarded. The essays questions are worth 1-4 points and the overall test score is worth 1-6 points. To be considered for admission, you must achieve an overall minimum total point score of 6 or higher; applicants who achieve an overall total point score of 8 or higher will be awarded immediate acceptance into the program.

5. Once a student is accepted into the program, an interview is scheduled with the student. All students are required to complete an individual interview prior to the first day of class.

6. A criminal record and a drug screen check will be conducted during the first week of classes. A criminal record or a positive drug screen detected will result in immediate dismissal from the program. Additionally, a criminal record will be conducted when you apply for licensure.
Transfer of Credits:

Students wishing to transfer credits from an accredited institution will be required to provide an official, sealed transcript that must be sent directly to Sumner College from the institution attended. Institutions must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) when considering transfer credit. Sumner College may request a college catalog or additional course information when evaluating coursework from other institutions. All transfer credit must comply with residency and curriculum requirements.Transfer credit that satisfies graduation requirements is used when determining a student’s academic level and progress. However, this credit is not used when computing GPA.

Students must complete 50% of the required coursework in the program at Sumner College and meet all graduation requirements to receive a degree.

Transfer credit will be evaluated and awarded by the Director of Education and submitted to the Registrar. Students wishing to transfer up to 50% of coursework from other institutions are required to submit official transcripts with their application packet.

Students should be aware that actual degree requirements vary from institution.
If you have additional questions please email the College President at jrussell@sumnercollege.edu or call 877-682-5373 to speak with an admissions representative to find out about the admissions process.
