U.S. Rep. Raul Labrador, R-Idaho, and former immigration attorney is proposing a bill that would allow foreign-born graduates of high-demand programs related to science, math, technology, and engineering immediate eligibility for permanent residency.
This is just a controversial as all of the immigration laws and disputes that has made the headlines in the last few years and even more so as the topic of higher education has taken center stage. Obviously this issue is a branch of much larger issues, and it’s easy to focus on 1 thing, but we can’t snap react to issues if you are ignoring the bigger picture, which is a number of things, such as job creation, developing innovative technology, increasing our society’s knowledge and graduation numbers etc.. It’s too easy to say that foreigner are “taking away” jobs. Take a look at what is going on in our country, there are jobs to be had, and there are employees to be had, why is there a disconnect? Why are we not producing enough educated citizens? These are just some things to think about. As a consumer, I want to make sure whoever is nursing me when I’m ill that they have ALL of the skills necessary, or if I am using an appliance, electronic, whatever it is I am consuming, I want to make that it was made by a skilled person.
