Phlebotomy Technician Program

The word phlebotomy means to puncture or cut into a vein.  Phlebotomy was first used by the Ancient Egyptians around 1000 BC.  They believed that removing blood from the human body was the key to curing sickness and disease.  This practice was called bloodletting.  As advancements were made in medicine, we discovered that blood offers an important insight into a person’s health.  We are now able to identify various health risks, like elevated cholesterol and glucose levels (diabetes).  We are also able to determine a patient’s blood type.

Our goal at Sumner college is to carefully guide you through our eight-week phlebotomy program.  We will equip you with the skills you will need to get started in this highly sought-after field and launch your medical career.  Under the guidance of expert instructors, you will be trained in multiple blood collection techniques, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and proper collection and handling of specimens.  Upon graduation, you will have the skills and knowledge to find employment in a hospital, physician’s office, lab, or donation center.

The Phlebotomy Program at Sumner College focuses on providing you with the skills, knowledge and clinical competence that you will need to work in this field.  We conduct all classes in a safe, professional environment. Your success in your chosen field is our number one priority.

Phlebotomy Duties Include:

  • The collection of blood from a vein
  • Processing and Transporting a variety of samples
  • Infection Control and Disease Prevention
  • Process CLIA Waived lab testing and processing

In addition to collecting, drawing and handling blood samples, you’ll also learn anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, venipuncture, urinalysis, blood cultures, and centrifuging and processing. The entire program can be complete in just eight weeks. In addition to blood analysis, phlebotomists are necessary for blood collection, either at mobile blood centers or dedicated donation centers. These phlebotomists may be especially busy during a health emergency, which can correspond with heightened interest in blood donations.

Job outlook LICENSED NURSING ASSISTANTS

Certified Nursing Assistants/Licensed Nursing Assistants are truly special people who genuinely care for others and take great pride in their work, making a valuable contribution to a patient’s comfort and safety when they are at their most vulnerable.
With their direct interaction to patients, CNAs are considered an essential link between the patient and the nurse. Employment of nursing assistants is projected to grow 8 percent from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations*

As the baby-boom population ages, nursing assistants will be needed to help care for an increasing number of older patients in nursing and residential care facilities. Older people are more likely than younger people to have disorders such as dementia, or to live with chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. More nursing assistants will be needed to care for patients with these conditions.
