Career Paths for Licensed Practical Nurses

One of the benefits of being a licensed practical nurse is the broad spectrum of career paths available to them.  Sometimes deciding which career path to take can be daunting, but for many LPN’s the opportunity to explore new paths is encouraging and exciting as they navigate through their career in healthcare.  Listed below are a few of the career paths available for licensed practical nurses:

  • Physicians’ offices
  • Community health clinics
  • Public schools
  • Dentists’ offices
  • Mental health facilities
  • Residential care
  • Traveling nurse
  • Home healthcare
  • Health clinics
  • Military

Licensed practical nurses can also be found assisting RN’s and physicians in maternity wards, emergency rooms and surgery.   There is also the option to advance their career to registered nursing or obtain bachelors or master’s degrees in nursing to pursue leadership or educational careers.

As the healthcare industry continues to adapt to the current and projected nursing shortage and new technology, licensed practical nurses are seeing their roles changing, growing and adapting to help meet patient care needs.

If you are considering an approved license practical nursing program to prepare for you for a successful career in healthcare, consider Sumner College. Since 1974, Sumner College has been preparing students for successful care. The practical nursing program can be completed in 13 months and the registered nursing program in 24 months.  To learn more, visit a practical nursing program or call 503-223-5100.
