Becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is a rewarding and challenging career path ideal for individuals who thrive in fast-paced environments, enjoy working with people and are interested in a career that contributes to the comfort and well-being of others.  Under the direction of Doctors and Registered Nurses (RN's), Licensed Practical Nurses work directly with patients.  Successful LPN's are able to multitask, enjoy variety in their work and can adapt to diverse situations involved with working in the medical environment.  Beyond the clinical aspects of the job, the most successful and satisfied Licensed Practical Nurses are good listeners and able to provide a compassionate, human element to the care they give.

Responsibilities of a Licensed Practical Nurse:

  • Measure and Record Patients' Vital Signs
  • Prepare and Administer Medication, Including Injections
  • Maintain Patient Comfort
  • Provide Wound Care
  • Collect Samples for Testing
  • Assist with Activities of Daily Living
  • Pain Management

With experience, LPN's may move into managerial positions supervising Nursing Assistants.

Preparation for the NCLEX-PN Exam:

Upon completion of the Practical Nursing Program, students are eligible to apply to the Oregon State Board of Nursing to sit for the National Council Licensure Exam for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN).  The program director, nursing faculty, and college support staff provide support every step of the way to help with each student's success.  The comprehensive curriculum that is approved by the Oregon State Board of Nursing will prepare you to work as a Practical Nurse in variety of medical settings such as:

  • Hospitals
  • Medical clinics
  • Doctor's offices
  • Outpatient Care Centers
  • Home Health Care
  • Assisted Living Facilities

All Nurse Educators are healthcare professionals currently working or have experience working in the field.  They know exactly what skills students need to succeed in today's healthcare setting and what employers are looking for.

How Are We Different?

At Sumner College, programs are designed with your busy and demanding lifestyle in mind.  Convenient morning and afternoon classes are offered Monday through Friday.  All courses are scheduled for you throughout your time at Sumner College to assure program requirements are met and satisfied.  This includes all prerequisite courses required for graduation.  To save you from standing in line at a bookstore, your books are given to you on the first day of class.  The college offers tutoring to students, promotes study groups, and offers open lab to support NCLEX prep testing.

Morning Session: 8 am - 1 pm

Afternoon Session: 1:30 pm - 6:30 pm
